A Ford in the Driveway

There’s a black Ford in the driveway,

An old yeller International pickup out back,

And a gray Willie Aero in the garage.

The ’64 Studebaker had been repossessed while inside cashing the check from this week’s work.

The ’59 black Ford had been his brother’s,

It had been converted to a three speed by him with the installation of a manual transmission.

It became available when the brother had purchased the new red Chevy Impala convertible.

One dark evening after work the three of them, the brothers and the boy had looked at a Corvette.

The mature family man had prevailed upon the much younger brother to consider the alternative.

The old, not so old at the time, international pickup was painted Shell Oil yellow,

He had worked at a chemical company associated with this firm.

The boy and him had hauled trash and stuff while hearing the roar coming from the Indy Speedway.

It was out back, loaded with materials required to build the dog pen for the beagles.

He’d build it one evening, concrete footers and all.

While the rest of the family had been taken to the Twin Lakes outdoor theater by their Aunt Joyce.

The project in the garage was an early four-cylinder, Willis sedan.

How acquired a mystery?

Bought and sold.

After first being repaired.

The hole and crack in the engine block fixed with early use of the HB weld product.

The four-door black Ford was used to move the family from Indy to back home.

Back home was his home that became our home, a mile or so from back home.

There’d be many more Fords in the driveway.

Other cars and trucks were obtained and used throughout his lifetime.

But the ones of one youth are often most recalled.

The Corvette seeking brother would soon add a boat to the convertible,

And Boat Lake would be a favorite designation for fun and memories.

Within four years or so, wedded and with two young ones the convertible Impala would give way to a four-door sedan Impala.

And like his brother they’d be many other cars, used, repaired and restored to include a most treasured ’28 Model A pickup.

The old yeller International pickup?

Still in the family.

Still around I’m told.

Sold ma

ny years ago, prior to the move back home., to a friend and buddy.

Husband of a first cousin.

The boy has a Ford pickup in the driveway. black, and one in the garage.
