Life Ain't Always Fair

Life Ain’t Always Fair…he was the new kid in school, well so was his sister. After six years in the big city, and three years of schooling for him, the family was making a homecoming. The old school building at Midland was quite the change from the modern city school. Everything was new and different in the boy’s life that summer. New house, new school, new teacher, new friends to make. Recess was the time to work on the friend making. Join the boys playing baseball. Still August, still hot. The boys gathering, send him into the schoolhouse to get the gear, the balls, bats, some gloves. So, he gladly goes, wishing to fit in. Walking up the stairs to the first level of the old building, he is confronted by the Principal, standing at the top of the ascent. “you’re not allowed in here during recess”, he barks, “come with me.”. As they enter his office, he snaps “Who is your teacher?”. And sends for her. Upon the arrival of the teacher, without comment or seeking an explanation, he administers three quick whacks from a broad, wooden paddle on the boy’s rump. Tears flow. Life ain’t always fair.
