He received his first pair while a toddler from a store in Odon; overalls. It has become his garment of choice and most practical article of clothing. No more fatigues or BDUs of an Airman’s life, nor the dress suit of a preacher, not even the Polo’s and Docker’s of the white-collar technician. Just a well-worn pair of denim overalls or in youthful slang “overhauls”. No need for a belt or suspenders; no worry your drawers going to slip and fall to the ground. A round front and a flat backside of no concern, as the shoulder straps of this miraculous attire holds firm and secure. Pockets for knives, watches and coins and pen and even the cell phone. Hammers, pliers and other tools may hang or be stored away. No need for a hanger or crest of drawers at the end of the day. A hook on the back porch or a nail in the wall of the garage readies them for quick and easy adorning on the next morn. For it is that definitive item of dress for the farmer and country boy, as it was for his Pops and for his Papaw, and as it remains for this educated hick.
P.S. FYI from my MSN Co-Pilot
The phrase “a pair of pants” might seem odd since pants are a single item of clothing. However, it has an interesting linguistic origin. Originally, pants were two separate pieces known as “pantaloons,” worn on each leg and secured around the waist. Even after they became one complete garment, the phrasing persisted. So, when discussing pants, we still use the term “pair” even though there’s only one item!
